What Are the Best Free Keyword Research Tools?

Your Best Free Keyword Research Tools

When it comes to keyword research, not everyone’s got the cash to pay for expensive keyword finding tools. Thankfully there are some great free tools you can use. I’ve put together this list of what I consider to be the best free keyword research tools available for small businesses. But like everything great, it takes time to use them properly. If you haven’t got the time, we can do your keyword research for you.

I’ve been doing keyword research for many years. What I’ve found is that there are many great keyword tools available which make things easy. But they are also costly. When you’re a start up business or a sole trader, you haven’t got the cash to pay the big players. So instead you spend hours doing your research yourself and that’s okay until you can afford to pay someone else to do it for you. I’ll walk you through the best free keyword research tools which give you the best results and are easy to use.

Top Free Keyword Research Tools

Here’s my pick of the best free keyword research tools to use:

  • Google AdWords: Keyword Planner – let’s start with the most well known, at least in name. Keyword Planner requires you to open a Google Adwords account to use the tool. It also offers more specific results to people who are actually paying for advertising. But it is free and can give you some general information about search frequencies. If you would like to use it, check out my beginners guide on using Keyword Planner here.
  • Google Correlate – this handy free keyword tool can tell you what search keywords people use together, to make your own large list of keywords. It gives USA search results though, which is not helpful for us here.
  • Suggestion Keyword Finder – lets you find different ‘levels’ of keywords, kind of like short and long tailed keywords. There are also a ton of other free SEO tools on this site too, which are well worth a look at.
  • Ubersuggest’s Free Keyword Tool – one of the best free keyword research tools, Ubersuggest will give you keywords which aren’t given from Google’s Keyword Planner. Definately worth having a play with.
  • WordStream – even though there is a paid version, you can get 30 keyword searches for free before you have to subscribe.
  • Google Suggest – while you won’t get search volumes here, you will get a truck load of keywords to pick from. You’d be surprised at the number of questions which people ask Google! To use it, just type a keyword into the Google search box and wait for the autocomplete suggestions.

After you have made your keyword list, make sure you check all the keywords regularly. Like clothes, keywords can go in and out of fashion and there’s nothing worse than making a faux pas! Remember, if you need any help with finding keywords, just ask us here at Spotty Lizard.
